What Do Analog Music Company Say?

"Dirty in a good way!" The SHSL (So High So Low) preamp based on the high-pass/low-pass filter inspired by an MS-20 filter and a Moogerfooger preamp.

SHSL provides the beautiful colouring to the sound. It can operate in array of modes from light saturation to pushing the amp into overdrive/distortion territory.

Controls
  • High Pass & Low Pass Filters
High Pass and Low Pass resonant filters inspired by MS-20 with separate cutoff and resonance controls. Filters are arranged in series and have controllable resonance. Past the oscillation point each filter begins to self oscillate and can be used as a CV controlled oscillator.
  • Preamp
SHSL has a dedicated preamp section which is inspired by Moogerfooger pedals providing the beautiful colouring to the sound. The pre section can operate in array of modes from light saturation to pushing the amp into overdrive/distortion territory.
  • CV & EXP controls
Separate CV inputs for each filter allow to control the the pedal with the external controllers like Korg SQ-1 or Arturia devices. You can also sync it with your modular or semi modular system. Separate expression inputs for each filter allow controlling the SHSL with the expression pedal.

  • MasterSets the overall output volume.
  • Preamp/Saturation: Rotate clockwise to add gain from the preamp section, which produces a darker, full-bodied, and saturated sound.
  • High Pass:  Rotate clockwise to strengthen the high pass. As you turn the knob to the right, fewer low frequencies will remain, allowing only the high frequencies to pass through the filter.
  • Low PassRotate counterclockwise to enhance the low pass. As you turn the knob to the left, fewer high frequencies will remain, allowing only the low frequencies to pass through the filter.
  • Resonance High: Sets the amount of amplification for the high frequencies around the cutoff point of the high pass filter. Increase the amplification by rotating the knob clockwise. The filter will begin to oscillate beyond the OSC Point.
  • Resonance Low: Sets the amount of amplification for the low frequencies around the cutoff point of the low pass filter. Increase the amplification by rotating the knob clockwise. The filter will start to oscillate beyond the OSC Point.

So High, So Low, but definitely not 'mid'

I'd been hoping for a UK stockist to get their hands on more SHSL pedals, and was delighted when an email from Pedal Jungle dropped into my inbox letting me know they had just four pedals, each in different finishes. I'm a fiend for the slightly industrial look, so jumped at the opportunity to grab the 'Raw' finish with the black faceplate and I'm glad I did because it looks lovely.

Early explorations of the pedal are really positive - the preamp has a warm but gritty vibe that isn't quite like any of the other preamps or drive pedals that I have. Running it with some slight added grit and the volume at unity gain fills out and thickens sound in a very nice way, whilst running it all-out gives a unique drive/distortion character. The volume also runs loud enough to act as a bit of a boost, which is a handy bonus!

The main draw of the pedal of course is the way that preamp interacts with the high and low pass filters and their corresponding resonance controls. The best thing I can say is that this feels and works like a really good synth filter, which makes sense considering it's inspired by the Korg MS-20. My favourite uses so far are severely cutting the bass and combing with heavy reverb, which gives some lovely early GY!BE quiet-before-the-storm kind of vibes; creating strange swells, ebbs and flows in loops with an expression pedal; and messing with the resonance controls to create some gnarly feedback. I haven't tried the CV input yet, but I expect them to open up a whole world of fun with synths and/or a DAW. If you're in the market for an easy to use, great sounding filter and/or preamp with something a little different, then this could well be it.

All in all a great pedal by a company that's still managing to create under really tough circumstances.

And as always, fantastic service and follow-up from the Pedal Jungle - keep doing what you're doing!

Hey Kris, first off many thanks for the purchase once again, your custom is so truly appreciated. And thank you for such a great and detailed review, it's great to learn and hear more about what this pedal can offer the user, brilliant stuff! As always it was our pleasure mate. Thanks again, Paul.
